“Great Mackenzie & Central Otago Explorer” – Fully Guided – $3440 pp This fully guided tour is a ‘6 night, 5 day’ package that starts in the Omarama/Lake Ohau area and ends in the Cardrona/Wanaka area and takes in the rugged and majestic high country and tussock lands of the Mackenzie Country, Lindis Pass, Central Otago and Northern Southland. It has some stunning new tracks and is popular with clients who have done our other tours or who might be looking for something different with a little more of a challenge.

Tour Information

“Great Mackenzie & Central Otago Explorer” This five day, six night fully guided tour starts at Lake Ohau (near Omarama)

Day one starts in the Hopkins River Valley above Lake Ohau and then taking a 4WD track through and over the Diadem Range to the stunning Ahuriri Valley before returning to Omarama for the nights’ accommodation

Day two will be part way up the Ahuriri Valley again then follow a track up beside the Avonburn and Lindis Rivers on local stations, coming out near the Lindis Pass summit. The afternoon of this day will be up and over the majestic St Bathan’s Range and then following either the Dunstan or Manuherikia streams out to your accommodation in the Naseby/Ranfurly area.

Day three will take you across the Maniototo Plain and up onto the Rock and Pillar Range and then follow a new 4wd track and part of the Dunstan Trail over the Rough Ridge to your accommodation near Clyde.

Day four will take you down the Old Man Range and then drop down to Piano Flat through the magnificent Beech Forests on Glenaray Station to your accommodation in either Gore or Waikaia.

Day five has a little road work for the start but can take in the Mavora Lakes in the morning and then the stunning Nevis Valley and a side trip onto the Old Woman Range on the way out to Bannockburn to finish the tour either in Cromwell or Cardrona. A trip into Macetown is another option.

Accommodation for this ‘Explorer’ tour is mostly a mix of motels, lodges, and historic hotels. Once again each couple will have their own room with a mix of ensuited and shared bathroom facilities. All bedding including towels are supplied. There is the usual surcharge for one person to a room. All meals are included along with a packed lunch and the choice of a continental or cooked breakfast.
